It doesn’t matter if you are a first time mom or a mom of multiples. I have seen a few posts on social media fairly frequently asking questions in regards to leaky diapers, brands etc. Now, I personally have done both disposable and cloth diapers but one thing every mom should know is how to prevent leaks (especially with boys).
Despite working in child care for YEARS before having my own children, it was through my midwife I learned this hack.
When my son was born, he was 7lbs 3oz and 20 inches long. Very normal size but like some babies he had a short torso. When my midwife was changing his diaper during one of her home visits she folded his diaper. I was amazed and had a “duh” moment.
For visual learners let me show you and explain further. The folding of the top portion of the diaper helps shorten the length and brings ‘up’ the leg holes where the urine would leak if too loose or open. With disposables you can simply fold it back towards your baby’s belly to the appropriate length and secure it as normal with the tabs. As pictured below, you notice in the first picture that there is a light blue pattern going across the body. In the second photo you can see that I folded the diaper deep following the line of where the pattern stopped. Cloth diapers are very similar (hence all of their buttons for adjustable sizing).
It’s as simple as that! Enjoy and happy diapering!
